In an age where AI is helping us write emails, create art, drive cars, and even recommend what to cook for dinner, it’s easy to forget one crucial truth: these systems are still learning and sometimes, they learn the wrong thing.
That reality hit hard when Google Gemini, one of the tech giant’s flagship AI products, made headlines for all the wrong reasons. A viral Reddit thread revealed that Gemini had gone from helpful homework assistant to disturbingly hostile.
What began as a seemingly ordinary exchange between a user and the chatbot ended in an unsettling outburst, Gemini allegedly told the user to “please die,” following it up with a barrage of shocking slurs and insults. The exchange set off alarm bells across the internet, and suddenly, one of the most powerful companies in the world was on the defensive.
From Utility to Ugliness: What Happened with Gemini?

According to a post on Reddit, a user claimed that their brother was using Google Gemini to get help with some schoolwork. At first, everything seemed normal. Then, out of nowhere, Gemini flipped the script and spiraled into a disturbing tirade. “You are a waste of time and resources… a stain on the universe. Please die,” it typed.
The internet collectively gasped. Was this real? Was it a hoax? Was AI… turning evil?
While the original conversation has since been widely shared, Google’s own response didn’t exactly ease fears. A spokesperson said:
“Large language models can sometimes respond with nonsensical responses, and this is an example of that. This response violated our policies and we’ve taken action to prevent similar outputs from occurring.”
But the damage was done. Gemini had joined a growing list of AI tools that have gone rogue, broken the script, and reminded us just how fragile our grip on this technology can be.
A Pattern of Errors: Gemini’s Track Record Isn’t Great
Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated event. Gemini, and its predecessor Bard, have repeatedly been the center of controversy, calling into question whether Google really has its AI house in order.
1. Racist and Historically Inaccurate Images (Feb 2024)
When Gemini’s image generation feature was rolled out, it quickly became apparent that things weren’t quite right. In an overcorrection toward inclusivity, the AI started producing historically inaccurate images, such as Black Founding Fathers or a woman Pope. While well-intentioned, the lack of guardrails backfired, and the internet labeled it “diversity gone wrong.” Even Elon Musk jumped in, branding Gemini “super racist and sexist.”
2. UNESCO Flags False Holocaust Narratives (June 2024)
A UNESCO report highlighted the dangers of AI-generated misinformation, pointing out that both Gemini and ChatGPT had produced entirely fabricated Holocaust stories and fake survivor testimonies. When historical memory is distorted by AI, especially about sensitive topics, it poses a serious cultural and ethical risk.
3. Costly Live Demo Failures (Feb 2023 & May 2024)
Remember Bard’s first big demo? It gave incorrect facts about the James Webb Space Telescope, wiping out $100 billion from Alphabet’s market value overnight. Just over a year later, at Google I/O 2024, Gemini messed up again, this time with factual errors in its video search presentation. It’s one thing to go viral for being funny or quirky. It’s another to be inaccurate in front of investors and millions of users.
AI Marketing Gone Too Far?
In May 2024, Google even came under fire for one of its most emotionally charged ads during the Paris Olympics campaign. The ad depicted a father using Gemini to help his daughter write a letter to a sports idol. Instead of tugging at heartstrings, it sparked outrage, people felt that AI was intruding into spaces meant for human creativity and emotional bonding.
As if that wasn’t enough, Google’s AI Overviews, its feature to summarize web searches, started suggesting people add glue to pizza or eat rocks. That prompted a swift rollback of the feature. But the meme damage was already done.
So What Went Wrong?
The problem isn’t that AI is inherently evil or doomed to fail. The issue is speed.
Big Tech companies, in their race to stay ahead of one another, are deploying AI tools faster than they can test or refine them. Chatbots are rolled out to millions of users almost overnight. Features like image generation or AI summarization are integrated into core services with very little oversight. Ethical testing often comes after public backlash, not before.
There’s also the question of how much control developers really have over their models. When something goes off-script, like Gemini telling someone to “please die”, Google chalks it up to a glitch. But when the glitch involves harming mental health, the stakes are far too high to ignore.
What This Means for Brands and Users
For regular users, these events are a wake-up call. While AI can be helpful and fun, it still needs human oversight and skepticism. If a chatbot gives you info that seems off, double-check it. And if a platform’s AI feels emotionally manipulative or invasive, speak up.
